Ian Madsen Wins W S S Grand Final In Perth
7/02/2010 1:44:04 AM ... Darren ODea
SYDNEYSIDER Ian Madsen dominated the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars Grand Final at the Perth Motorplex by winning the 20-lap preliminary feature on Friday night and the 30-lap main event on the Saturday night.
Madsen showed his hand a couple of times early on before he made a move stick and won from Robbie Farr and Ryan Farrell.
Emotions ran high for David Priolo at the start of the main event after he was forced to change an engine prior to the A Main and then suffered a flat left rear tyre as the field assembled for the restart.
He was then on a charge from the rear when the race started and made up a handful of places in the first couple of laps until he went underneath Luch Monte too hard in pits bend, wiping both cars out in a violent flip.
Moments later Priolo admitted responsibility for the crash and felt sorry for taking out Monte’s car as well.
Farr led the restart after the first four laps from Miller and Farrell.
Kerry Madsen went to fifth over David Murcott after five laps but had to survive a counter attack on the following lap.
Miller closed on Farr with 18 laps to go as they got into traffic but Farr was equal to the challenge and managed to enjoy a buffer for half a dozen laps.
With 11 laps remaining Madsen knocked on the door and gave Farr a wake-up call after an attempted inside move.
He then went high the next lap and got an excellent run to make the race-winning move.
“I can’t believe it mate…it’s awesome tonight to come out and back it up,” Madsen said.
“I just can’t thank Gary (team owner Gary Miller) and Brett (crew chief Brett Sartori) and the whole crew enough.”
Madsen’s response to his move over Farr was simple.
“I just stuck it in there and hoped I would pull it off.”
Miller was happy with the decision to step out of the driver’s seat and give it to Madsen this week.
“That is very hard to take,” an emotional Miller said.
“That guy has done one hell of a job for a kid to jump in the car he was not familiar with.
“To win back-to-back is unbelievable…I just one to keep him now.”
Series sponsor Bill Mann of Performance Wholesale Australia presented the trophies to the round winners.
“To be related with World Series Sprintcars as a sponsor and to be involved with it is absolutely fantastic,” Mann said.
“To all the people who have run the series, the officials, the crowd, everybody, thank you very much for giving us good value for money.”
Farr paid credit to the winner.
“Full credit to Ian, he has done a real good job all weekend,” Farr said.
But he thought he had enough to get the feature race win in the bag.
“He got the job done and full credit to him..I am not complaining by any means.
“I would like to thank Bill Mann for sponsoring the series..hopefully we will catch you again next year.”
Farrell accepted the third-placed trophy and said they exceeded their goal of finishing in the top five – claiming fourth overall in the series.
“We managed to achieve that,” Farrell said, but admitted he would have liked to have won a serious round or two.
The last word went to the Krikke Motorsport team that wrapped up the series.
“There is not a better team in this country,” winning driver Brooke Tatnell said.
“It proves it year in, year out…they make my life a hell of a lot easier…it has just been an awesome year.”
Team owner Shane Krikke was also a happy man.
“It feels good to be able to wrap up the championship here in WA,” Krikke said.
“I just can’t thank Bill Mann, Performance Wholesale and Queensland Speedway Spares enough for sponsoring the series.
“Brook has done one hell of a job.”
B Main Coyle led from the first to the last lap of the B Main to win from David Ellement, James McFadden and Carl Dowling who all made the transfer to the back of the A Main. Kendrick was fifth when he pulled up on the main straight with five laps to go. Danny Smith and Max Dumesny were locked in an intensive battle back in the pack but it counted for little as neither made the cut. Dumesny overdid it in pits bend with four laps remaining but managed to keep the boot in while spinning and rejoin – albeit a few spots back. Shaun Bradford went out with two laps to go, suffering major engine damage. There was a tense moment for Coyle when he went to pass Daryl Clayden as the latter turned down to the infield. C Main: Wanless wasted no time in getting to the lead in the 4-car C Main and checked out to win from Kye Scroop, Troy Lawson and Steve Caunt. Vortex Top 8 Shootout. Reidy and Farr made the transfer to the Silver Dash while Madsen didn’t go any further and Priolo didn’t turn a lap, with the team forced to change an engine They were up against Murcott and Lines in the Silver Dash and were too good, setting themselves up to race against Farrell and Madsen in the Gold Dash. Ultimately Farr got the award after getting himself from the fourth row in the A Main to pole. “We were wide open all the way around there,” Farr said. “We have been digging ourselves out of a hole all weekend, just go to do 30 good laps, play the traffic right and come away with the win.” Heat 7 Kendrick showed plenty of track speed to win from the front row over Wells and Smith. “A lot of this is learnt from over east,” Kendrick said. “It was a good learning experience.” The youngster said it was always good to have his father in his corner “He is always a good help..he has been around this sport for so long.” Dumesny got crossed up in pits bend in the first lap and nearly came unstuck but managed to keep the boot in. Murcott pulled up quickly in pits bend and nearly had Tatnell run over the top of him with a lap and a half to go. Heat 8 Waddell had no trouble in winning the next heat from pole position, taking the victory from Reidy and Sartori. “It was good to get that one,” Waddell said from the infield immediately after the win. “We struggled a bit last night…we are trying to put this car up the front for the McGrath Foundation,” in reference to the car being painted pink to raise awareness for breast cancer awareness (the team was hoping to raise $10,000 for the one-off pink paint scheme over the weekend). “It is good to back in the winner’s circle. “We have had a pretty good year so far.” Reidy was the star of that race, starting from sixth but attacking early with an impressive slide job to get up into a challenging position. Heat 9 Clayden felt the heat from officials after he jumped from the front at the start of this heat and for his efforts was sent to the rear of the field. After a wild start Bradford got the jump and stayed on the gas to clear out for a big win over McFadden and Mann. “It’s good to win a heat…it’s get your confidence up. “The car is going real good…hopefully we can get it up to the A Main. “The track is really fast at the moment.”
