Ian Madsen Wins W S S Preliminary Feature In Perth
6/02/2010 1:27:10 AM ... Darren ODea
FOR the second time this week a Madsen has claimed a round of Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars in Western Australia.
On the back of Kerry Madsen striking gold in Kalgoorlie on Wednesday night it was brother Ian who won the preliminary feature race at the Perth Motorplex on Friday night.
The Sydneysider won from a determined Ryan Farrell and David Murcott Madsen was happy with the decision this week to team up with the Perth-based team run by Gary Miller.
“I just can’t believe it mate, to come here and get a win like this,” Madsen said. “It is probably the best track in the country by far, I just can’t wait for tomorrow night.”
Not only was it the second time one of the Madsen clan had won in the west this week it was the second time Perth driver Ryan Farrell finished second.
“It has been a really big season for Monte Motorsport,” Farrell said.
He thanked team principal Luch Monte and the entire crew for the big season. “It has really opened my eyes up.
“I am giving it 110 percent…we just weren’t good enough.
“Ian had a better car tonight, that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
Farrell sits in fourth going into the final showdown but a good showing in the Saturday night finale could see him steal third.
Tatnell leads the series from Robbie Farr and Max Dumesny.
“The car was really good,” Murcott said after the win.
“I missed the top a few times and kinda wasted an opportunity.
“It gave me some laps on a track we don’t race on very often.”
Farrell started on the front row with Madsen and led the pack as they crossed for the first lap as Luch Monte spun which resulted in contact between Ben Ellement and American Danny Smith.
Ellement suffered front end damage while Smith had a flat right rear tyre and Monte was sent to the rear for the restart.
Madsen was all over the back of Farrell after five laps and showed his hand in pits bend but couldn’t make the move stick.
The leaders were on the backmarkers with 11 to go.
Madsen went under Farrell with eight to go but Farrell reclaimed the real estate before the Sydney driver put his new ride back in front and set sail for home.
Farrell put in another lunge on the last lap but came up short as they crossed the line. Fourth was Steven Lines (who started third) from David Priolo, Kerry Madsen, Brooke Tatnell, Jason Johnson, Robbie Farr, Danny Reidy, Peter Lack, Carl Dowling, Jamie Maiolo, Kris Coyle, Bryan Mann and Monte.
B Main Despite having an out of place front wing Bryan Mann had no trouble in winning the B Main from Reidy, Smith and Coyle. Mann was the early leader from David Ellement, Smith, Reidy, Coyle and Dumesny. There was a restart after four when Todd Waddell spun around in turn one and at the same time Jason Kendrick pulled with a flat right rear tyre.
With six laps remaining Mann was up in lapped traffic.
Darryl Clayden spun around in turn one with four laps to go and at the same time officials stopped David Ellement when it was revealed he was missing a glove and he was to the infield.
Ellement said he checked his helmet just before the start of the race and as he tried to adjust it lost the glove.
Priolo showed the visitors the quick way around the track and was the only driver to dip into the 13-second zone in qualifying with an impressive 13.889-second lap at 129.599km/h.
In fact the local boys showed their dominance with Farrell second (14.008), Jamie Maiolo fourth (14.128) and Ben Ellement fifth (14.160).
Queenslander Lack was the only visitor to break into the top five and was third with his 14.126 second burst.
Heat 1 “We did the best we could do out of that heat race,” Johnson said after winning the first heat from the outside of the front row.
It was a good result for the American after the team was forced to change an engine at the start of the night.
“Something went wrong with our motor in hot laps when we were warming it up and I just shut it off.”
“Then in qualifying we were just way too loose.”
Heat 2 It was a Kendrick Racing 1-2 in the second heat with Kendrick winning from Madsen.
“We would love to start putting some wins on the board,” Kendrick said straight after the win.
“That was a good start…we did not do well in time trials but you can’t get much better than that in the heats.
“These guys have so much respect for each other,” he said in reference to running with the big guns of the national series despite it only being his third season behind the wheel.
Heat 3 Dowling won the third heat from Watson and Ian Madsen. There were some good slide jobs between Watson and Wells for a few laps before Wells surrendered some ground and was then under attack from Madsen.
After being locked in another couple of laps of slide jobs it was Madsen who got the spot and then put in a major lunge to try and steal second from Watson on the last lap.
“Yeah that was not a bad start for coming back home,” Dowling said of the win.
“Unfortunately we didn’t qualify well…it was my fault.”
Dowling said his short campaign on the east coast had made a huge difference to his racing.
“The competition over there is a class above the rest.
“It’s great to be part of the series and to learn against some of the best guys in the country.” Heat 4 “I didn’t want to drive that hard…I don’t really know how I went…hopefully we got enough points to get into the main show,” Madsen said after winning the fourth heat from a fast finishing Mann and Clayden.
“The team is starting to gell really well, we are connecting on all levels.
When asked about tyre wear Madsen said it wasn’t so bad after it had some water on it.
“I think it will be a good race,” Madsen said, hopeful he would make the preliminary feature race.
Heat 5 “We did all that we can do,” Johnson said after his second heat win.
“When you start on the front row you need to capitalise on them.”
When asked about the smoke from his motor midrace Johnson wasn’t too concerned.
“It was a long time from the first heat to the fifth heat and the motor got a little bit cold.”
He said it was ok when they started to build up oil temperature.
There was a tense moment late when Priolo and Monte started trading slide jobs and it nearly all came undone at one stage in pits bend.
After the race chief steward Gary Pendlebury penalised Priolo two spots for excessive use on the infield.
Lines was one of the big movers in this race, racing up from seventh to fourth.
Heat 6 “We needed to have two strong races and that’s what we did,” Dowling said after winning the sixth heat from Dumesny and Smith.
“Hopefully that will put us off the back of the A or at the start of the B…we have nothing to win and everything to lose in the B.
“We have been fast around here recently,” Dowling said in reference to his speed.
